about

Farah Ahmad Khan, Balraj Singh Samrai and Vikaash Sankadecha combine once again to chronicle life in the COVID-era through music, song, verse, South Asian percussion, and contemporary electronic production.

Released in August 2020 the Opera North supported “I should have hugged you tighter when we last met [Oh What A Joy]” featured Farah, Balraj, Vikaash as well as Tunde Adekoya and Pandit G from the UK, and Gavsborg and Shanique Marie from Jamaica. The work was met with wide acclaim due to the way it addressed the impact of COVID-19 on communities of colour worldwide. In particular it received press support from Mixmag, FACT Magazine and Resident Advisor leading to radio interviews and plays on Mary Anne Hobbs’ BBC Radio 6 Music show, Talat-Farooq Awan’s BBC Radio Manchester show, BBC Radio Leeds, News Click India and Cosmo Radio, Germany.

In the time since its release Farah and Balraj have both been selected to be MIF Sounds Artists for 2021 working on a swathe of new material. An early draft of the instrumental caught Farah’s ear with her writing to this rapidly before the pair remotely worked together to co-produce and apply the finishing touches to the track. The result is “Healing” - the first of many fresh works to be aired that seeks to find a positive affirmation as a follow up to “I should have hugged you tighter..” offering hope and solidarity as well as marvelling at the scientific advances that may heal and unify divisions; a celebration of survival.

Once again the pair connect with Tabla-maestro Vikaash Sankadecha for his irresistible rhythmic and meditative tones that are put on centre display for the “Healing (Dub Version)”.

As well as including “I should have hugged you tighter…” on this release it also features a fresh Dub Version of this work. Initially an exclusive dubplate mix for Pandit G for a social distanced gigs this DJ-friendly mix allows Samrai to delay and phase poignant expressions from Gavsborg, Shanique Marie, Tunde Adekoya and Farah Ahmad Khan’s vocals yet also allowing the instrumental production to shine.
